Personal Admin Menu

The backoffice sidebar can be unlocked so that each operator arranges it for themselves: the entries they use most are pinned in a group at the top, and the rest are reordered by dragging.

It is a personal view, not a second menu. The arrangement never changes what the tenant's menu contains, who may open a page, or what other operators see. The tenant-wide order and visibility of menu entries stay in /admin/settings/menus.

The feature belongs to the default admin theme. A tenant using the sober admin theme keeps the standard sidebar.

Activating it

The feature is off until an administrator switches it on for the tenant.

  1. Deploy a release whose default theme bundle has been built: the behaviour ships in that bundle.
  2. Run the tenant migrations (composer app:migrate, or php bin/console migrate for one tenant). They register the admin_menu_unlocked feature flag, switched off.
  3. Sign in with a user holding system.write and open /admin/settings/feature-flags.
  4. Switch admin_menu_unlocked on and save.
  5. Operators reload the backoffice. With tooltips enabled, the help icon next to the sidebar title describes the unlocked menu.

To lock the menu again, switch the flag off. Every operator sees the standard order immediately; their arrangement is kept and returns if the flag is switched back on.

Step Requires
See the feature flags system.read
Switch the flag system.write
Arrange one's own sidebar Access to the backoffice; no extra permission

Pinning entries

Pinning keeps an entry one click away in a Pinned group above the navigation.

  • Point at an entry that opens a page. A pin appears at the right of the row; on a touch screen the pins are always visible.
  • Select the pin. The entry is added to the Pinned group, and its pin stays highlighted.
  • To remove it, select the pin again, either on the entry or on its shortcut.

A pinned entry is a shortcut: it also stays in its own group, so pinning never empties a group. Each shortcut shows the name of the group it comes from, and its full path as a tooltip. Groups themselves cannot be pinned, only the entries that open a page.

Reordering entries

An entry moves among the entries of its own group: top-level entries among themselves, the entries of a group among themselves. A group moves together with everything inside it. Shortcuts in the Pinned group reorder among themselves in the same way.

Input How
Mouse Press an entry and drag it; a line shows where it will land. Release to confirm, or press Escape to cancel.
Touch Hold an entry for about half a second, then drag it.
Keyboard Focus an entry and press Alt+Up Arrow or Alt+Down Arrow.

Every move is announced to screen readers with the entry's new position.

Restoring the standard menu

Once something has been pinned or moved, a restore button appears next to the entry counter of the navigation. It returns the sidebar to the tenant's order and removes every shortcut.

Where the arrangement is kept

The arrangement is stored in the browser, like the other sidebar preferences (open groups, collapsed sidebar), not in the user account. In practice:

  • it persists on that browser profile, across sessions;
  • it does not follow the operator to another browser or device;
  • operators who share one browser profile on a shared workstation share one arrangement;
  • clearing the site data of the browser resets it;
  • an entry added to the tenant's menu later appears after the entries the operator already arranged, and an entry that is removed, or that the operator may no longer open, simply disappears from their arrangement.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Check
admin_menu_unlocked is not listed in the feature flags The tenant migrations have not run.
The flag is on but no pin appears The deployed default bundle predates the feature, or the tenant uses the sober admin theme.
An entry cannot be dropped in another group Intended: entries only move within their own group.
The arrangement is missing on another computer Intended: it is stored per browser.
